I have been attempting to research a possible Indian ancestry although it is european in location, and will appreciate ANY help anyone can give. I grew up with the understanding that I was Italian on my father's side and Ukranian/Polish on my mother's side. My maternal grandmother died years ago when I was just 11, and my mother does not know anything about any Indian ancestry. However, as a child I always wondered why my maternal grandmother was so dark, but never questioned it, and having always had an interest in and an attachment to the American Indian, as an adult with more knowledge I now have questions which stem from old photos of my maternal grandmother. Not only is she dark skinned, but by her features she looks to be fullblood Indian (I of course have doubts about fullblood but started asking Indian friends if it were possible that any American Indians had gone over to Europe in the 1800's and settled there. I was told that many had, and it had been as early as the 1600's. Not only would I like to have that further verified, I would also like to know if there is any avenue I can possibly take to pursue a tracing of American Indian heritage stemming from a European ancestor whose features and skin color lead me to believe she could have had Indian in her background. (My mom takes after her father so she is light, and does not even know information past her mother's maiden name). Again, any help or information anyone is able to offer will be greatly appreciated.
