My grandmother was Native American

There is a family rumor that my grandmother was full-blooded Native American. I am unable to ask her myself, as she passed away many years ago. How can I find out when I have limited knowledge of her. I would like to know the tribe she could have been a member of. Her maiden name was Helen Reed(I think that is how it is spelled). She died in the Scroon Lake area of northern New York. I was also told that she was adopted. I don't have much more information, but if you can help me in any way, I would be extremely grateful. Someone told me that she could have been a member of the Northern Cheyenne tribe because she was from near the Canadian border. I have been able to trace some of my family to Canada.
