Many people are aving success by going back to the census records. Take a date (1880?) and check to see where your grand mother was living and look up her record. Many times it will indicate race (such as Native American). If it does then you have something more to go on. You may want to contact the Indians (such as the reservation in Salamanca, NY and inquire of a specific name. Sometimes this is best done in person but once in awhile the person knows where they can look to varify a name. Some tribal records are around. I have found a few don't try too hard so it is best to make a trip when you have some time to spend at the museum, court house, and tribal center. You may want to check out Warren County, Pa records when the COrnplanter Grant Indians were still living there.

best of luck
