That people are searching for a way to live with themselves. They don't want to be white, nor can they just consider themselves American. Its really a moral awakenning that was predicted by the Ghostdances over 100 years ago. What is really sad is that people feel the need to find a pedigree even if it is as fractional as you say in order to justify what they feel in their hearts. I don't think the original people cared about these percentages as much as they did actions, character and commitment. No one needs a card to prove they are a Jew or a former slave only American Indians have to prove themselves this way. This way they can "prove" the extinction and eventual complete eradication of Native people and culture. Any decision by any American not to assimilate must be seen as a move toward liberation, reconciliation and eventual repatriation. This is perhaps the final test of Native People - can we accept, forgive and unconditionally love these people who show up now at the 11th hour and have not suffered the daily humiliation and hourly pain of just being Red in America? Those people who can just come in whenever they want and leave while we just gotta sit there and take it. If they can live their fairy tale, then I can live mine. Next time one of them stares at me on the bus or tells me how "neat" they think we are, next time I am in a job interview or pulled over by the cops, I will remind them that I am at least 15% white.
