Why is the eagle such an important American Indian symbol?

Southwestern American Indian tribes regard the eagle a sacred symbol because of its majestic appearance an the fact that it flies higher (?) than most birds; therefore it must be closer to the creator.   Eagle feathers are used in ceremonies by  the Creek and Cherokee, who  also have an eagle dance".  Alas, the American bald eagle is on the endangered species list, and it is now highly illegal to use, sell or possess its feathers, an offence punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $56,000.  in the creation of ceremonial.  You may recall the incident in which First Lady Hillary Clinton was given an eagle feather dream catcher featuring eagle feathers by Peg Bardon, a supporter, which resulted in a conviction back in 1994. She was granted a pardon by outgoing President Clinton in 2000.
