What stones are most commonly used in American Indian jewelry?

American Indian Jewelry is most commonly made of turquoise, which is used as an applique on wood, bone and shell.  Other stones and minerals used include soapstone, and silver, copper, brass and iron.  In ancient times, turquoise was believed to bring good fortune, and good health; if you lost you turquoise talisman, it was believed you would suffer an ailment.  Different tribes had different interpretations for the virtues of turquoise, from good luck in the hunt to rain, with medicine as a constant central theme.
