What are the fundamentals of American Indian religion?

There is no definite answer to this question...  Like many other religions, that of ancient Native American tribes revolved around a central force of nature, or creator, and most tribes had their own creation myth.  Animals figured prominently in the American Indian "Pantheon", as did the various forces of nature, and ghosts of ancestors.  Ceremonies ranging from simple harvest dances to ritual cannibalism were also part of these complex belief systems, as were the varying degrees of importance attributed of government, the familial unit, and the medicine man (shaman).
