Was Pocahontas real, or just a part of American Indian folklore?

Pocahontas was real.  Her first encounter with European settlers was in 1607, she met John Smith a year later, following his capture by Chief Powhatan's brother.  Pocahontas saved Smith's life by throwing herself down and holding his head so he wouldn't be beaten to death.  Contrary to popular belief, Pocahontas did not marry John Smith, who was forced to return to England after being burnt in a gunpowder accident, but instead married John Rolfe, a distinguised colonist. She met again with John Smith during a sojourn in England where she would later contract small pox and die at the young age of 21.

Pocahontas may have lived a short life, but her contribution to maintaining good relations between European settlers and American Indians make her a key figure in American history.
