Where did the American Indian totem pole originate?

From the West Coast and Southernmost Alaska.  Totem poles were representative of a family's wealth and social standing, as well as storytelling monuments.  While the Maya Indians and other Mesoamerican cultures carved hieroglyphs in stone, Haida, Tlinggit, Tsimshian, and Kwakiutl told their stories by carving them in Cedar.

An interesting article on totem poles from Native access to Engineering.
